Bob Caspe Joins Emano Tec as CEO

Veteran Serial Entrepreneur comes of out retirement for new medical company

March 5, 2007 -- Today, Bob Caspe, serial entrepreneur and co-founder of three high technology companies in Massachusetts left his brief retirement of 2 years to joint a medical device startup Emano Tec inc. as their new CEO.   Mr. Caspe states that he began his involvement with the company two years ago by introducing the two co-founders and served as an advisor since that time.  Most recently, after attending the product launch of their new product, the MedTab at the HIMSS07 tradeshow, Mr. Caspe stated that "I've never seen such a positive response to a new product.  Bernardo and Wayne offered me the opportunity to take the helm at Emano Tec and given the product response, it was an offer that I simply couldn't refuse."  Most recently, Mr. Caspe has been serving as CEO of his own consulting firm and teaching at Babson College's MBA program a course titled "Marketing for Entrepreneurs."  More information on both can be found on Mr. Caspe's website...

At the HMISS07 tradeshow in New Orleans Louisiana Emano Tec introduced MedTab a hand-held data tablet which has been perfectly tailored for bringing EMR data to the patent's bedside and clinician's hands.  The MedTab is built on a new display technology that offers unmatched readability and resolution to a module with its size and power.

The MedTab includes the following rich feature set:

  • Portable – 12 Ounces, measuring 5.5” X 7.5” X 0. 5” which comfortably fits a lab coat pocket

  • High Resolution Display – 1024x768 pixels using a proprietary E-Ink high contrast, low power “digital paper” display.

  • Rugged – capable of withstanding 30g impact

  • Touch Screen (including pen for notations)

  • Intel 624MHz Processor

  • WinCE OS

  • Bluetooth for audio or data transfer

  • Fingerprint scanner

  • Audio In/Out

  • 802.11/g WIFI

  • Cisco’s OEM security Client– supporting state of the art wireless security

Emano Tec worked closely with the Care Group of Boston in creating this unique solution to bring critical EMR data wirelessly to the physician.  Dr. John Halamka, CIO of Harvard Medical School and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center states: "I believe that the sweet spot for medical laptops/tablets is a weight under a pound, an 8 hour battery life, and a 3 foot drop onto concrete without damage.  MedTab is the first device I have seen that meets those criteria."

A worldwide initiative by the medical community and governmental agencies is well underway to aggressively readdress the problems of inefficiency and errors in delivering patient care by significantly improving the retrieval and storage of patient records.

Wayne Bailey, CTO of Emano Tec states that: "the total healthcare market for mobile information devices can grow to in excess of $8B over the next 10 years and we expect to be a major influence on that market.  We are currently seeking both end users at hospitals as well as OEM EMR providers who are interested in privately branding MedTab.

EmanoTec has extensively modified WinCE to support this radically new and different display technology. This makes porting existing application to MedTab simple through the use of a CAB file to install as in the case of a standard PDA.

Most EMR systems require a thin client which is either a standard web browser or a custom client. Many of the newer EMR systems use standard web browsers as their client.  MedTab provides Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) which has been modified to be an OS shell and presents itself in kiosk mode. Thus, the device is secure from user tampering and the entire screen is available to the backend system.   MedTab uses WinCE as its OS which most vendors support if they have a custom client. The most common customer client is Citrix which supports WinCE.

Unlike PDA or Ultra PCs, MedTab offers the screen size and resolution necessary to view and update EMRs. Unlike Tablet PCs, MedTab is small and light enough to carry in a lab coat pocket.

Beyond this, MedTab will last a whole shift (12 hours) without recharging, is rugged and can be disinfected. MedTab offers the possibility of a single sign-on system since its software configuration and provisioning are controlled by the IT department and not the end user.

MedTab is lockdown and as such, the end user can not configure or modify its software or use it for any purpose other than what the IT department has configured it for. MedTab is easily provisioned remotely over a secure, wired LAN line or wirelessly over state of the art 802.11 security protocols which is configure remotely.

A stolen device represents little risk to security since the system is locked down, and it’s possible to monitor its position and know if it’s leaving a designated area.

The intellectual property of the company includes the solution to a variety of difficult problems with respect to the integration of the E-Ink display into a WinCE environment, encryption standards, product integration and market research.  The company believes as well that it has a substantial lead on competition with respect to gaining acceptance for this type of product in the healthcare market in the leading segment here in Massachusetts.
